Geraniums are easy to propagate from cuttings and that is what we want to show you below, step by step. To reproduce our geraniums infinitely we need the following material:
- a mature geranium
- small plastic pots
- seedling substrate
- sand
- knife or scissors
- rooting hormone (optional)
1. First, we select the healthiest, firmest and thickest stems and cut them above the second axil counting from the top. That is, just above where the leaves sprout.
2. Remove the leaves and shoots from the lower half of the cutting . Finally, cut the lower end of the stem just below a node. This is where there is a higher concentration of the plant’s natural rooting hormones.
3. To improve the success rate, dip the base of each cutting in a small amount of rooting hormone to stimulate root growth.
4. Fill the pots with a mixture of seedling substrate and sand . This will improve drainage. Place 2-3 cuttings in each pot. Water well and place the pots with cuttings in a well-lit place inside the house. It is best not to cover the cuttings with plastic to prevent mold growth.
5. After a few weeks the wound will be healed and we will start to see the first roots . After 6-8 weeks, the cutting should already have a well-established root system.
6. We can now transplant each cutting into a single pot with normal substrate. We will keep them with a good degree of humidity and then in the next few weeks we will be able to plant the geranium wherever we want.
