Plants and vegetables that should absolutely be avoided near potatoes

Thyme and oregano: double-edged aromatic herbs

Thyme and oregano  are  popular aromatic herbs to enhance many dishes  .

However, it is important to keep them away from potatoes. This is because these grasses tend to attract harmful insects such as aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. These pests can cause significant damage to potatoes by feeding on their sap and spreading diseases.

Additionally, thyme and oregano are competitive plants that can hinder potato growth by hogging nutrients and soil space.

One solution to avoid these problems is to plant thyme and oregano at least  3 feet (90 cm  ) away from the potatoes.

This way, you can enjoy the benefits of these aromatic herbs while protecting your potatoes from pests and competition.

Onions: undesirable neighbors for potatoes.

Onions are another vegetable to avoid near potatoes  .

The main reason behind this recommendation is that onions and potatoes are susceptible to the same diseases, especially mildew. This fungal disease can spread quickly from one plant to another, especially if they are grown next to each other.

By separating onions from potatoes, you reduce the risk of cross-contamination and improve the overall health of your garden.

Additionally, onions and potatoes have different water needs. Onions generally require less water than potatoes, which can cause watering problems if the two are planted together.

Therefore, to ensure optimal growth of both crops, it is best to grow them in separate areas of your garden.

Beans: legumes that are not very compatible with potatoes

Beans, although they are nutritious and delicious vegetables, are not  the  best companions for potatoes.

They are considered alleles, meaning they produce chemicals that can inhibit the growth of potatoes. These substances, called allelochemicals, can stunt potato growth and reduce yield.

It’s also important to note that beans and potatoes attract some of the same pests, such as bean beetles and Colorado potato beetles.

By planting them together, you risk increasing the population of these harmful pests and causing significant damage to your crops.

To avoid these problems, be sure to plant beans at least  4 feet  (1.2 meters) away from potatoes.

Peppers: Solanaceae to avoid potatoes

Peppers are members of the  nightshade family  , just like potatoes.

While that may sound like a good reason to grow them together, it’s not. Peppers and potatoes are susceptible to many of the same diseases, including late blight, bacterial rot, and tobacco mosaic virus.

By planting them together, you increase the risk of infection and the spread of these diseases in your garden.

Additionally, peppers and potatoes have similar nutritional needs.

If planted close together, they may compete for soil resources, which can lead to poor growth and reduced yield. To avoid these problems, keep a distance of at least  90 cm  (3 feet) between peppers and potatoes.

Knowing which plants and vegetables to avoid near potatoes is essential to ensuring healthy growth and a bountiful harvest. By keeping thyme, oregano, onions, beans, and peppers away from potatoes, you’ll minimize the risk of disease, pests, and nutrient competition issues.

With these tips in mind, you can grow a harmonious and productive garden.
