A good cup of coffee has many health benefits, but did you know it has multiple applications to stimulate the growth of your plants and keep pests away from the leaves?

Coffee is one of the star products for your garden or orchard, its use is not new among gardeners who have known its benefits for a long time.

Reusing it would benefit the soil and help you garden more efficiently.

You should save the coffee grounds you use and dry them, then wrap them up and store them for later use.

This step is very important as it will prevent fungi from growing and damaging your plants. Let’s discover here the different uses of coffee for a healthy garden!

1- Fertilizer

Your coffee grounds can be used in compost, helping to aerate the compost while providing nutrients. Since it is coffee that you have already used, it loses its initial acidity.

This ingredient helps retain moisture and improve drainage, so that the roots have more room to grow. You should mix it with soil and mulch, using a maximum proportion of 20% to avoid the opposite effect to the expected one. This percentage in your compost will give you extra nitrogen and enrich it.

2- Fertilizers

Coffee waste can be transformed into an excellent fertilizer, its high percentage of nitrogen will increase flowering and improve the fruits of your plants.

Coffee contributes to the proliferation of microorganisms that promote plant growth.

If you want to use it for this purpose, soak it overnight and after 24 hours pour the contents onto the soil around the stems and leaves.

3- A natural pesticide

Coffee is used to repel snails and slugs because the structure of its soil prevents these unwanted animals from eating the plants. Since they move on humus, they cannot walk on it because they need a soft, moist soil.

Pour a thin layer of coffee grounds around the plant and gently mix it into the soil.

4- Food for worms

Worm humus is essential for soils and plants. It aerates the soil.

A small amount applied once a week can feed earthworms, which, by digging their tunnels, allow the soil to aerate and promote better water circulation. However, be sure to use it sparingly: coffee, if used in excess, could, on the contrary, keep them away due to its acidity.

5- Padding

Recycled coffee grounds are perfect as mulch, they will prevent weeds from taking root and protect the soil.

Mulching involves covering the soil with a layer of organic matter, thus protecting the soil and insulating it from the elements.

Place a 2cm thick layer of coffee grounds on the soil.

6- A substrate for seedlings

Before planting your seedlings, you should carefully wash the pomace to remove any residue and dry it carefully to prevent the formation of mould. This will give you a substrate for your soil that will capture the moisture necessary for the development of your seedlings, and will enrich the soil with phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium, which are particularly interesting for the growth of your plant.
