How to Plant Avocado at Home, Starting from Seed, for an Infinite Supply

Avocado is a delicious and irresistible food, versatile enough to be added to a variety of preparations or eaten on its own (add a tablespoon of olives and a pinch of salt, good!). However, as it is a tropical vegetable, it is often difficult to find it in the supermarket, and its cost can be high.

Here’s how to plant avocados at home, starting from their seed. It is a very simple operation, which can save us a lot of money. Not to mention the satisfaction of eating a home-grown vegetable.

The first thing to do is to extract the seed from the avocado, without cutting or breaking it. Once the seed has been washed, in order to remove any residue from the plant, and to have dried it carefully, it is necessary to proceed to the preparation of the soil.

Some seeds are triangular in shape, while others are more spherical. But all of them have a bottom (where the roots will come from) and a top. It is important to determine the end at which the roots will come out, as this is the one that should be immersed in the water.

Insert chopsticks into the sides of the seed and place it in a glass of water (the bottom should be completely submerged, see photo).

Germinate the seed for 3-6 weeks. Once this period has elapsed, a sprout will have grown at the top of the seed and roots at the bottom.

When the stem reaches 6 to 8 inches tall, cut it in half to encourage new growth. Finally, move the plant to a larger pot by making a hole in the center of the pot to place the plant.
