Rosemary is one of the  most  used medicinal and aromatic plants for cooking, health and beauty. For this reason, more and more people want to   grow rosemary at home  . Those who have land, such as an orchard or a garden, have an easier time growing this plant because it grows very easily on the ground. Those who live in an apartment or house and only have a terrace, balcony and/or windows must resort to pots and be a little more careful when growing it.

The first thing to know when caring for a rosemary plant is undoubtedly the conditions it needs to live and grow in good conditions.  Among the conditions to take into account when caring for potted rosemary  we find the following:

• Adequate light for rosemary:  It must  receive direct natural light  , as it is a plant that needs a lot of sun and hours of light. However,  care must be taken  not to leave the plant in direct contact with the sun’s rays for too long in times of strong sunlight, otherwise its leaves can easily burn. For this reason, in times of great heat and strong sunlight it is  better to find a place with sun and shade,  and in times of medium heat or cold, a place with as much natural light as possible.
• Optimal temperature for the rosemary plant:  This plant  can adapt to hot and cold temperatures  , but in reality the right temperature for rosemary is the one that exists in  temperate and warm climates  , so it does not withstand hailstorms, frost and sudden drops in temperature, but it also does not resist areas with very strong solar radiation.
• Sufficient humidity for a rosemary in a pot:   This plant is native to the entire Mediterranean region, so it is  used to periods of drought and periods of more water, but never in excess.   Therefore, high humidity is not necessary and watering is sufficient.

Knowing the conditions explained above, it can be concluded that this potted plant  can grow well both indoors and outdoors,  but it is always  better to plant it directly in the ground  where it will grow much stronger.

Depending on the climate, it is advisable to keep the plant outdoors or indoors,  so in cold climates  it is better   to have  the rosemary pot indoors . Inside the house it is important to place the plant near a window  and not to place it near radiators and air conditioning units, as these can dry out the plant.

However, if we  live in a temperate or warm climate,  it is better  to keep rosemary outdoors in a place  where it receives many hours of natural light. However, if the sun is  hot enough in our area  , it is a good idea to place the rosemary directly in a  sunny and shady place,  for example under a larger plant or tree.

Watering rosemary: how much, when and how to prevent it from rotting

Another  rosemary care   is watering,  because as we have already said,  it must be well dosed.  In fact, this plant is used to periods of drought and wetness, but never to extreme conditions. For this reason,  although there are  different irrigation systems  , both for plants in the ground and for potted plants, for the care of aromatic plants at home, such as rosemary in a pot,  the drip irrigation system is  recommended. With this system you can control very well whether the watering  is sufficient and not excessive.

But even if you use the most appropriate irrigation,   inadequate drainage  won’t do much good as the plant can become waterlogged and die. Therefore, when transplanting it into the pot, you must be careful  to use a suitable potting soil and place some stones in the soil near the holes  to ensure that the water filters well and doesn’t get trapped and drown the roots.

When the plant is still small and during  periods of extreme heat,  watering can  even be extended to one day or every other day, provided there is good drainage.  In slightly colder periods  , on the other hand, it is better to water the plant one to three times a week, depending on the temperature  .

It is advisable   to prune rosemary   when you notice that it has dry or yellowish leaves and flowers,  when you notice that it is barely growing, or when there are parts that are heavily infested with parasites such as aphids or scale insects.

Ideally,  you should wait until the end of flowering and cut just below the part that needs to be removed  , avoiding cutting off completely healthy parts. This way you will see that the next time the rosemary blooms it will be beautiful and will fill the room with fragrance.
