Lettuces can be grown in many different places and in different ways, such as in the garden, in containers, in the vegetable garden or in raised beds.
Nowadays there are salads of all sizes, colors, flavors and textures with different growing needs.
Dig in some compost or manure to add material to the soil a few weeks before planting or transplanting the lettuces. This will help with water retention in the soil.

Lettuces can be kept indoors in seed trays, allowing them to develop well for about a month before transplanting. By starting indoors, crops can be planted well before the onset of spring. Likewise, if you sow your seeds outdoors but under a cloche, you can sow your seeds four weeks earlier than normal.Sow your seeds in a hole about 1cm deep and about 4cm wide.
Transplant your lettuce in batches a few days apart so you have a constant crop supply throughout the growing season.
If you have problems with the germination of your seeds, you can refrigerate them for a few days before sowing them. Once out of the fridge, it makes the seeds feel like it’s the end of winter and time to germinate.
Transplant the seedlings when their leaves reach about 2.5 cm long.
Lettuces grow best in cool, moist conditions. They should not be placed so that they are in full swing in the midday sun, this will lead to faster bolting, resulting in a poorer crop.
The type of soil
Lettuce likes to thrive in moist, well-drained soil that has been organically enriched with compost or manure. Although the soil should be moist, it should not be soggy.
If you have soil that is too heavy, you can add compost/organic manure or grow a cover crop.
Lettuce likes slightly acidic soil with a pH of around 6.0 to 6.5
A mulch can be applied to the soil to help with soil water retention and also help prevent weeds. An alternative to organic mulch is black plastic with holes for lettuce to pass through. However, plastic will not supply nutrients to the soil like organic mulch would.
Lettuces should be watered regularly to ensure that the soil does not dry out. Pour water at the base of the plants rather than the leaves because watering the leaves can promote disease.
Harvest :
Lettuce should be harvested before it begins to turn bitter and flower.
If harvested in the morning, lettuce has a higher sugar content than if harvested in the afternoon.
If you are harvesting the entire plant, cut the lettuce just above the soil line with a sharp knife.
If you are removing only a few leaves, remove the outer leaves first and allow the young inner leaves to develop.
The varieties:
The main types of lettuce are loose leaf, romaine (COS) and butter. Leaf lettuce has a faster growing time.
