We are used to throwing away  coffee grounds  , without thinking that they can find many other uses. Thanks to their texture and the substances they contain, coffee grounds find multiple uses in the garden.

Let’s discover together  how to use them  in  the garden  or for the plants on our  balcony  , obtaining many benefits from a 100% natural product.

Grow the sprouts

Have you planted some  seeds  that you hope will sprout new  seedlings  soon? You can speed up this process by administering  ground coffee  .

Reduce them to powder and  spread them  evenly over the  soil, mixing them a little with the surface part of the soil itself.

Thanks to  caffeine  and  nitrogen  , coffee grounds will accelerate the  germination process  : the  seedlings  will sprout more  quickly  .

Strengthen plants

Precisely because they are full of  caffeine  ,  calcium  and above all  nitrogen  ,   coffee  grounds can be used as fertilizers  or  natural fertilizers  .

Sprinkle them on your plants’ soil in  spring  and  summer  to help them develop more leaves, grow faster, and get stronger.

Warning  : Coffee grounds are obviously not always the best solution for strengthening a plant that appears to be in pain. If in doubt, ask a professional for advice.

Hydrangea color change

Coffee grounds  are particularly suitable as a fertilizer for  acidophilic plants   , as they preserve and accentuate the acidity of the soil.

When spread on the soil, therefore, they tend to  gradually lower  its  pH  .

That is why we can use them to change the color of hydrangea flowers   . The color of the flowers depends, in fact, on the pH of the soil, which, the higher it is, the more it tends towards pink. On the other hand, the lower the pH, the bluer the color.

Sprinkle coffee grounds regularly on the soil of your hydrangeas, so that their flowers turn  bluer  !

remove slugs

In addition to their nutrients,   coffee  grounds can also be used for their grainy  and rough texture.

All you need to do is  sprinkle them  as a powder around your potted plants, on the balcony floor, forming  circles  . In this way, you will create a real  barrier  that  slugs  and  snails  will not be able to cross to nibble on the leaves of your plants.

An   even more effective trick ? Mix some  eggshells  cut into  small pieces  with the coffee grounds: this way you will create an even more insurmountable obstacle for these little animals!

Keep bad odors away

Many ignore the “  absorbent  ”  potential of ground coffee  . These, in fact, can absorb  bad  odors  and retain them  .

Therefore, if your dog has relieved itself on the floor of the balcony or patio, after cleaning it,  rub  a little ground coffee on that place to  eliminate the  smell  permanently and quickly.

Enrich the compost

If you are  composting  with natural and organic ingredients, you can also add   coffee grounds which, with their high nitrogen content, represent a precious source of nutrients.

As a general rule, you can also add other substances to the compost, such as   fruit and  vegetable scraps  ,  dried leaves  , and  grass  clippings  .

You can then  spread  the compost on the garden soil to make it much more  fertile  .
