How to Grow a Lemon Tree from Seeds Easily in Your Own Home

Citrus fruits are rich in vitamins, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and the list goes on. While they may not constitute a balanced meal on their own, they offer a great list of benefits that can complement the rest of our diet. At the same time, they tend to be high in sugar, so it’s imperative to monitor how much you eat when trying to maintain a balanced diet.

Pretty funny – you need it, but at the same time you need to avoid overdoing it!

Some citrus fruits are easier to grow than others. Fortunately, two of the best can be grown in your own garden. By growing them yourself, you’ll be able to taste the difference in freshness and quality, and keep your body free of any chemical contamination associated with non-organic growing. Not sure what I’m talking about? Are here:

1. Lemons

It is recommended to buy a young tree (two to three years old). This way you will get the best results. Choose a clay (or plastic) pot with many holes in the bottom of the pot. Make sure the pot you use is larger than your tree’s root ball. As the tree grows, you will need to transfer it to a pot about 30-40 cm deep and 40-50 cm in diameter. Put the tree in the pot. Place some rocks in the pot’s drainage tray to improve air circulation. Next, fill the pot with good quality soil. To wit: certain types of soil are specially prepared for the cultivation of these fruit trees, so they will probably give much better results.

And that’s it. Make sure the location where you place the pot provides the tree with 8 to 10 hours of sunlight every day. And don’t forget to water it regularly. Please note that you should not overwater your young tree. A lemon tree takes between 7 and 9 months to mature, so when it has acquired its beautiful colors, it is ready.

You can also grow a lemon tree from seeds.

To grow your own lemon tree, you need to obtain the following:

  • An organic lemon since non-organic lemons often contain sterile seeds
  • Fertile soil, preferably containing peat, vermiculite, perlite and natural fertilizers.
  • A pot 15 cm wide and 15 cm deep
  • A seedling pot approximately 60cm wide and 30cm deep.
  • A sunny indoor growing location and possibly a grow light

Follow these steps to grow your own lemon tree:

  1. Moisten the potting soil. Don’t soak it.
  2. Fill a smaller pot with some soil leaving just an inch below the rim of the pot.
  3. Take a lemon seed and clean it; An easy way is to suck on the seed until it is clean.
  4. Plant the seed immediately; It should be moistened. Plant it about 1cm deep in the center of the pot.
  5. Then lightly sprinkle the soil over the planted seed.
  6. Cover the jar with clear plastic wrap, then seal the rim of the jar with a rubber band. Make many small holes in the plastic (for example, with a pencil).
  7. Place the pot in a warm, sunny location.
  8. Mist regularly to keep the soil moist, without making it soggy.
  9. After two weeks, when the sprout appears, remove the plastic wrap from the pot and use a grow light if your plant needs more light.
  10. Take care of your plant by keeping the soil moist. Make sure your plant receives 8 hours of good light every day. And give it an organic fertilizer but in moderate doses.
  11. Make sure your tree is not attacked by certain diseases or insects. Use some natural pesticides (e.g. nettle manure) if you think your tree needs it. Also remove any wilted leaves. Protect the sapling!
  12. When your young plant no longer fits in the small pot, you will need to transfer it to a larger pot. You will have to follow the same procedure for transferring the boat. Young plants need more water than older plants, but both need enough water. You should never starve your plant. (1)

2. tangerines

Tangerines are great because they are high in antioxidants, calcium, magnesium, fiber, and more. They are a good alternative to oranges and are not too difficult to grow at home.

How can you grow them?

If you have decided to grow a tangerine tree indoors, we recommend choosing a young tree. Saplings have a higher success rate than plants grown from seeds. Prepare the pot as for the lemon tree (holes in the bottom, drainage with stones). Finally, and this is important, provide enough light to your offspring. Tangerines can be grown indoors as they are usually no more than two meters high. Water the newly planted tree daily, but moderately. As soon as the plant’s roots break through the drainage holes of the pot, use a larger pot. Pick fruits as soon as they start to turn orange because then they start to lose their flavor.

Tip: Be careful when picking the fruit. Try to leave the small button on the top of the fruit.

There you have it, two easy ways to have delicious citrus fruits on your table without any difficulty.
