Flies can become an annoying problem, especially during hot seasons. If you’re looking for an affordable, eco-friendly, and effective way to get rid of these unwanted insects, you can make a super effective fly trap with materials you probably already have at home.
In this article, we explain how to build one using a simple plastic bottle cut in half and an attractive mixture of sugar and vinegar.
Materials needed:
- 1 plastic bottle (1.5 L or similar)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup vinegar (white or apple)
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Scissors or cutter
- Stirring spoon
Preparation instructions:
- Cut the bottle Use scissors or a utility knife to cut the plastic bottle to about one-third of the height from the top. This will give you two parts: the lower part will be the container, while the upper part (the one with the mouthpiece) will act as a funnel.
- Prepare the mixture
At the bottom of the bottle, pour:- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup vinegar
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1 teaspoon salt
Mix well until the sugar and salt have dissolved completely. Vinegar and sugar will attract flies, while salt will slow down the deterioration of the mixture.
- Complete the trap Take the top of the bottle (the one with the cap, which you will have removed) and flip it inside the lower part, so that the mouth is facing downwards, forming a funnel. The flies will enter attracted by the sweet scent, but they will no longer be able to get out.
- Placement Place the trap in an area where you have noticed the presence of flies: near a trash can, in the kitchen, or outside near ripe fruit or composter. However, avoid placing it too close to where you eat or cook.
Other tips:
- For greater effectiveness, replace the mixture every 4-5 days or when it begins to lose its attractiveness.
- If you want to enhance the attractiveness, you can add a small piece of ripe fruit or a tablespoon of honey to the mixture.
- Make sure the trap is stable to prevent it from tipping over.
Creating a fly trap with a plastic bottle is a simple, cost-effective, and sustainable method to combat these pesky insects. With just a few ingredients and a pinch of dexterity, you can keep your home or garden quieter and cleaner, without having to resort to chemicals.
