How to make the tastiest garlic powder: the trick for an intense and tasty flavor

Homemade garlic powder is an irreplaceable ingredient in the kitchen: fragrant, intense and 100% natural, it gives character to many recipes without the additives of industrial versions. Preparing it is very easy and the result is surprising: a rich, authentic and persistent aroma that will make your dishes truly irresistible.

Ingredients

  • Fresh garlic (preferably Italian and organic)
  • (Optional) A pinch of coarse salt

Method

1. Peel the garlic

Choose healthy, dry, and spot-free garlic heads. Peel the wedges and cut them into thin slices. The more uniform the slices, the more evenly they will dry.

2. Slow drying

Place the slices on a baking sheet lined with baking paper or on a wire rack. You can dry them in three ways:

  • Convection oven at low temperature (50-60°C) for about 2-3 hours, leaving the door slightly open to let the moisture out.
  • Dryer: This is the best method. Let it dry for 8-12 hours at 50°C.
  • In the sun: in summer, you can dry garlic slices in the open air, covered with cheesecloth, for 2-3 days.

The slices are ready when they become completely dry and crispy to the touch.

3. Blending

Place the dried slices in a power blender or spice grinder. Blend until you get a fine powder. If you want to enhance the taste even more, you can add a pinch of coarse salt before blending.

4. Storage

Pour the powder into an airtight glass jar. Store it in a cool, dry place away from light. It lasts up to 1 year, but the scent will be so good that it will end much sooner!

How to use it

  • In sautés to enhance the flavor of vegetables
  • In meat, fish and legume dishes
  • In sauces, dressings and marinades
  • Even in homemade bread or in savory baked recipes

For an even more aromatic version, you can lightly toast the dried slices in a non-stick pan for 1-2 minutes before blending them: they will give off an even stronger aroma.
