Rain is great for plants, and also for giving us a break during the hotter months. However, the situation becomes worrying when there are problems with leaks or moisture accumulation in our homes.
It is not only an aesthetic issue: the appearance of saltpeter and mold on the walls can cause structural problems that are difficult and expensive to fix. Fortunately, it is possible to get rid of saltpeter with home methods.
Identifying mold or saltpeter accumulations on walls is very easy, as they appear as dark or yellowish stains on walls or ceilings. Saltpeter, in particular, looks like a kind of “foamy” powder.
Saltpeter is a set of mineral salts that is generated when potassium nitrate, present in construction materials, comes into contact with moisture and oxygen.
Before applying any of the remedies below, remember to wear gloves and a mask to protect your eyes and skin.
Use a putty knife to scrape mold or saltpeter off the wall, then wipe with a cloth dampened in a solution of vinegar and water. Use another clean cloth to remove the residue and repeat this operation 2 or 3 times.
You can repeat this last operation once a day, until the wall is completely clean. You can also spray the vinegar and water solution directly onto the stains.
Alternatively, you can prepare a mixture by mixing a little water and baking soda until you get a creamy consistency. Apply the mixture on the saltpeter or mold and wipe after 3-4 hours with a damp cloth.
