Materials Needed
To wash a large blanket or comforter you will need:
Warm water (approximately 40°C)
6 tablespoons baking soda (to remove odors and stains)
2 tablespoons dish detergent or liquid detergent
A mop or brush (optional, to facilitate the washing process)
Step-by-step procedure
- Prepare the wash mixture
Fill a bathtub with warm water (about 40°C).
Add the baking soda and liquid detergent.
Mix well until the ingredients are completely dissolved.
- Soak the blanket or comforter
Place the blanket or comforter in the bathtub.
Make sure it is completely submerged in the water.
Let it soak for 4 hours so that the detergent works and breaks down the dirt.
- Knead and rub gently
After soaking, gently press the blanket to remove any trapped dirt.
If you have a mop or brush, you can use it to make the process easier and not strain your back.
Do this process several times so that the detergent penetrates the fibers well.
- Rinse thoroughly
Empty the dirty water from the bathtub.
Fill the bathtub with clean water and rinse the blanket several times until the water runs completely clear.
You may need to change the water up to 4 times to remove all detergent residue.
- Drain excess water
Without lifting the blanket, gently squeeze it into the bathtub to remove excess water.
Use a mop or stick to help you drain the water.
- Dry properly
Hang the blanket over a chair or clothesline to drain the remaining water.
Leave it in a well-ventilated, shaded area to prevent the sun from discoloring the fibers.
If there is too much weight left, place a towel underneath to absorb moisture.
Tips & Advice
Don’t use hot water: Hot water can shrink the fibers or damage the colors of the blanket.
Avoid direct sun drying: Direct sun can harden the fibers and discolor the fabric.
Use a mild soap: Avoid harsh detergents to protect delicate fibers.
Don’t twist the blanket: Squeeze gently to avoid deforming the fibers.
Regular cleaning: If you use the blanket or comforter frequently, clean it at least every 2 months to avoid dust and odor buildup.
