We are talking about so-called toxicplants that can make humans or animals seriously ill and, in some cases, even cause death. Poisonous plants are found all over the world. In Italy, there are ten specimens that can be considered the most harmful to health.

It is very difficult to distinguish a poisonous plant from one that is not. Sometimes they have aesthetic characteristics that are so identical that they can be misleading. It often happens that we end up confusing them and touching them or ingesting the berries, especially children who cannot hold back their curiosity and end up risking their lives.

How to identify a poisonous plant? The answer is quite obvious: you have to know and study the different specimens. Evolution has allowed some animals to learn to identify dangerous plants from those that are not and therefore to ingest them to purify their bodies or to stay away from them. The same is not true for human beings who have to study to identify dangerous specimens.

Today, we would like to draw your attention to one plant in particular that should never be buried. This is precisely what causes heart problems: this is called oleander. It is a shrubby plant of Mediterranean origin and therefore resistant to heat and drought.

Don’t think that simply ingesting its seeds can be life-threatening: this plant is toxic in all its parts. If you come into contact with an oleander and accidentally ingest its seeds or leaves, here are the first symptoms you may experience:

• dizziness;
• drowsiness;
• vomit.

But it is above all the heart that is affected. Oleander poisoning causes tachycardia, arrhythmias, seizures, and eventually cardiac arrest, which in some cases can be fatal.

Although this plant is very dangerous and very toxic, its sale is not prohibited. It is often possible to see it in municipal gardens or in spaces open to the public. The reason? It is economical and has low maintenance costs.

However, we should learn to recognize and distinguish it from other plants given its toxic and deadly potential. In some cases, oleander also grows spontaneously. If you spot them in your vegetable garden or garden, get rid of them immediately, especially if you have children or pets.
