How to Grow Blueberries in a Pot at Home

Blueberries are healthy and delicious fruits , with great benefits for our health. They are antioxidants, they prevent aging, cancer and many diseases of the cardiovascular system. They also help control diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol, and are excellent for fighting urinary tract diseases.

Growing blueberries at home is very simple, and even though it takes three years to bear fruit, it will save us a lot of money. You can start with a shrub that already has fruit if you don’t want to wait. Or start with seeds, following the instructions below.

You must first choose the vase. If you’re starting with seeds, you’ll need to germinate them in a small container (a glass, for example). If, on the other hand, you have decided to start from a seedling, you will need to use a larger pot.

For a young plant, a pot of about 20 liters is ideal. When the plant matures, i.e. after the fourth year, you will need a pot of 60 to 75 liters.

In winter, pots do not offer the roots the same protection from the cold as the soil, which is why it is advisable to insulate them by applying hay to the bottom.

Blueberry plants like acidic soil with a low pH (between 4.5 and 5). To make an acidic potting soil, you can add peat, cottonseed flour or compost made from pine bark and leaves.

Blueberries begin to bear fruit after the third year of age. Most blueberry plants are capable of self-pollination, but to be safe, we can plant two plants together from different crops.

Blueberries need a lot of sunlight. Water frequently, but they won’t grow well if the potting soil is constantly moist. Use a light potting mix with good drainage.

Blueberries are a very versatile fruit, ideal for sweet and healthy preparations.
