Hydrangeas are one of the most popular ornamental plants, because their heads or inflorescences, with small but large flowers as a whole, are decorative and beautiful. Since these are plants with a great diversity of types and varieties, it is very common to want to reproduce a specific plant that we have or have seen and thus fill our garden or terrace of these beautiful flowers. Luckily, propagating hydrangeas is not difficult and you only need to follow a few steps and instructions  so that everything goes well.

The most common method for reproducing hydrangeas is by cutting , as it allows faster reproduction  and, in this way, we are sure that the new plant will have the same characteristics as the mother. The ideal time to take hydrangea cuttings is after flowering, which usually happens in autumn.

The cutting technique is a quick and easy way to reproduce new plants. A small branch or stem is cut from a mother plant to plant it and give rise to a new seedling, genetically identical to the parent and, therefore, with the same characteristics. Then follow these steps to reproduce hydrangeas from cuttings :

1. The first thing you should do is cut a branch, of course. Be sure to disinfect your pruning shears , you can also use a sharp and disinfected knife. It is very important that the cut is made diagonally , and that it is as clean as possible, to facilitate wound healing without being attacked by parasites. or diseases.
2. To multiply hydrangeas by cuttings, it is enough to cut a stem of at least 10 cm , with at least three nodes and new shoots. If the stem is very long, several cuttings can be obtained from one.
3. Subsequently, all the leaves are removed from the last node of the cutting, cutting them at the base of the node and leaving only half of the remaining ones . Thanks to this  cleaning of the leaves , we minimize dehydration of the new plant.
4. Store the cut cuttings in a damp towel or a paper towel so they don’t dry out.
5. The next thing you need to do is prepare the substrate for cutting . The ideal is to use a mixture of : peat, worm castings and coconut fiber in equal parts, along with vermiculite and perlite  . Adding perlite and vermiculite to a plant mixture of acidic soil mixed with sand also gives good results.
6. Once the pot or seedbed has been prepared with the new substrate, make a hole with a stick and you can proceed to plant the cuttings , introducing them in the compound about 2 cm. You can help yourself with some growth hormone or homemade organic rooting to increase the chances of a successful cut.
7. After this, it will be enough to  water the cuttings  and place them in a sheltered place, at the  shade and with good humidity.  In about 20 days, the hydrangea cuttings should have taken root, but it is best to wait for the shoots to grow before transplanting them again.
