Avocado, a delicious fruit with a creamy texture, offers incredible health benefits. Rich in fiber, healthy fats, minerals and antioxidants, the soft and flavorful flesh contains over twenty vitamins. Growing your own avocado tree at home gives you access to beautiful avocados, adding a note of green goodness to your day-to-day.
Although growing an avocado tree requires patience – it can take more than 8 years before it bears fruit – the fruitful result is definitely worth the effort invested.
Growing an Avocado: Step by Step
- Prepare the Stone: Start by cutting an avocado and take out the pit. Rinse it thoroughly to remove any pulp residue, then let it dry.
- Germination in Water: Place the avocado pit with the pointed end upwards and, using three toothpicks, fix them at regular intervals on the most rounded part, slightly facing upwards. Place the pit on a glass of water, making sure it rests on toothpicks and half is submerged in the water. Find a sunny spot for the glass, changing the water regularly.
- Planting Seeds and Maintenance: Once the seed has developed roots in a few weeks, it is ready to be planted. Fill a pot with potting soil and gently plant the sprouted seeds halfway up from ground level. Make sure the pot gets enough sun, keeping the soil consistently moist and well-drained. Avocado trees thrive in tropical conditions, so protect them from cold, frost, and temperatures below 15°C (59°F). As the tree grows, you will need to transplant it into a larger pot.
- Feeding the Tree: Water your avocado tree thoroughly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly before the next watering. It uses a fertilizer specially formulated for avocado and citrus trees to nourish the soil.
Reaping the Fruits of Your Labor:
After a few years, your avocado tree will bear its first fruits. Avocados remain stationary when attached to the tree and can remain there for months. Only collect them when they have reached their maximum size. Once harvested, the avocados will mature in one to two weeks.
