How to grow garlic at home using a toothpick and water

Garlic is a very versatile ingredient in the culinary activity . It can be eaten raw or cooked, rubbed on bread, sautéed in sauces with onions and peppers, used whole in stews, preserves, soups and many other options.

Furthermore, since ancient times and throughout the Middle Ages, garlic has medicinal uses . It is used as a natural antibiotic, to treat colds, colds and prevent flu.

Although we can buy it at the supermarket, one option is to grow them at home . Next we’ll see how to do it yourself, with few items other than some toothpicks and water.

Necessary materials

  • Head of garlic (about 15 cloves)
  • Palillos skewer
  • Tall tubular container
  • Small towel or tea towel to cover the glass.
  • Small container to place the skewers
  • PVA glue or glue
  • Pliers
  • Water

Step by step to grow garlic

  1. We take the head of garlic and remove all the cloves.
  2. We cross several teeth with the skewer toothpick, leaving a space between tooth and tooth.
  3. Dip the toothpick with the garlic cloves in water and leave it to soak for 12 hours
  4. Remove all the water from the glass and leave the toothpick inside. We cover it with the towel or towel and leave it for 48 hours.
  5. Let’s remove the reviewer. Garlic will have many roots. They come out of one end and are shiny white.
  6. We take the small container and place the chopsticks so that the ends adhere to the edges of the container.
  7. We put a little glue on the ends of each toothpick and support another toothpick transversely to form a mesh.
  8. Rotate each garlic clove slightly so that it is upright, with the roots facing down.
  9. Pour water into the container to cover the roots. Every two or three days we have to change the water.
  10. After twenty-five days the roots will occupy the entire container and the segments will have long, thin green leaves.
  11. It’s time to collect them. You need to remove the garlic cloves from the toothpicks. For this you can cut the ends with tongs and remove each clove of garlic. At the same time you should cut the white roots of the tooth. Remove the initial clove of garlic and it will look like a white stem underneath, with small roots, and green above. It’s ready-to-eat garlic.

Tricks for growing garlic

Sole

Garlic grows very well in sunlight. I advise you to place the container in a place that receives direct sun , even for a few hours. If it’s hot and the sun is very strong, you can use a curtain or screen to filter the light so the leaves don’t burn.

Water

The garlic plant grows with a lot of water, so the hydroponic system is ideal . But you also have to be careful. If the container has little water, the garlic will become small. And if the amount of water is excessive, diseases and fungi can appear. You may notice the fungus appearance because the garlic will have green and white moss attached to it.

Maintenance

The garlic plant is very easy to maintain . It generally doesn’t have pest problems, but I advise you to keep an eye on the crop from time to time.

Finally, I advise you to choose medium-sized cloves for cultivation . Small cloves will produce small garlic, and very large ones can split in two, causing them to grow unevenly.
