Thyme is a versatile and enjoyable plant to grow in both an aromatic herb garden and your garden in general. Growing thyme is not difficult and with the right knowledge this plant will flourish easily in your garden.

Growing thyme from seed:

The thyme plant can be grown from seed, but often people choose to avoid growing thyme seeds. Thyme seeds are difficult to germinate and can take a long time to germinate. If you want to grow a plant from thyme seeds, follow these steps to grow thyme from seed:

– Gently scatter the seeds in the soil in the container you have chosen to plant the thyme seeds.
– Next, gently spread the soil over the seeds.
– Water thoroughly. Cover everything with plastic wrap.
– Place the container in a warm place.

The seeds germinate between one and 12 weeks. Once thyme plants are about 10cm tall, plant them wherever you want your thyme to grow in your garden.

Plant Your Thyme by Divisions:
Typically, a thyme plant is grown from one division. Thyme is easy to divide. In spring or fall, find a mature thyme plant. Use a shovel to gently lift the thyme bunch off the ground. Tear or cut a smaller clump of thyme from the main plant, making sure the root ball is intact when divided. Replant the mother plant and plant the division where you want to grow your new thyme.

Tips for growing your Thyme:

Growing thyme in poor soil with little water will make thyme grow better. For this reason, thyme is an excellent choice for xerilandscaping or landscaping that require low water consumption. In late fall, if you live in an area where it freezes, you’ll need to mulch over the plant. Remember to remove mulch in the spring.

Thyme harvest:

Harvesting thyme is easy. Just cut out what you need for your recipe. Once a thyme plant is established (allow one year), it is very difficult to abuse the plant for a cooking recipe. If you have just planted your thyme, do not cut back more than a third of the plant.

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is frequently used for both culinary and decorative purposes.
