Autumn pruning is considered optional and is less commonly practiced, but it is nevertheless useful, because it allows you to maintain your bush and complements spring pruning. In fact, autumn pruning helps to clean up roses. However, this is not recommended in regions with a cold climate so as not to risk weakening it.

Autumn pruning is beneficial for many varieties of roses. As for non-remontant roses, i.e. those that bloom only once a season, it is best to prune them from early autumn, or wait until late winter to do so. Perennial roses that bloom several times a season also need pruning in autumn. This encourages the formation of new branches in preparation for the next flowering.

How to prune a rose bush correctly?

<img decoding="async" src="https://www.santeplusmag.com/wp-content/uploads/Tailler-le-rosier.jpg" alt="prune the rose" class="wp-image-350598" title="Why should roses be pruned in September and how to do it correctly? Source: spm

To successfully prune your rose bush in the fall, use shears to remove dead wood, brittle twigs and old branches from the base. Also remove diseased or rotten branches. If you keep them, your bush may deteriorate in winter and contaminate nearby plants. Also get rid of dead leaves at the base of your roses and avoid adding them to the compost heap. These can carry diseases that affect roses, and therefore increase the risk of contamination.

After this cleaning, proceed also to a shortening of your rose bush which consists of reducing the length of the branches. If you want to keep them, make sure to cut them only by half. Keep the most vigorous ones and prune diagonally, 1 cm above a bud that seems to you to be facing the outside of the twig. If you prune too short, you risk making your rose bush more vulnerable to the cold and frost of winter. The twigs that crowd the heart of your rose bush should also be pruned.

When pruning your rose bush, it is also important to differentiate between suckers and young shoots. A sucker is a secondary branch that grows on the main branches of your shrub or plant. The sucker does not produce flowers or fruit and exhausts your plant, as it absorbs its sap. It is therefore recommended to remove this aerial branch to promote the development and flowering of your rose bush. You can recognize a sucker by its foliage. The leaves have 7 lobes, instead of 5. However, young shoots should be kept, because they will later give a flowering branch.

This fall pruning cleans your rose bush of old or diseased branches that hinder it and promotes the flowering of your bush.

The rose bush is a hardy and vigorous flowering shrub.
