As Tammy Sons of Tennessee Wholesale Nursery explains, it appears as large, irregular brown spots on the above-ground part of the plant, including the leaves and stems.

As they develop, their spots enlarge, drying out the affected areas and reducing the healthy surface of your plant, which can no longer photosynthesize and slowly dies…

How does late blight damage tomatoes?

As a disease that spreads very quickly, late blight can cause a small drop in productivity or a complete loss of the crop. It depends on several factors, including:

Weather conditions;

plant phenology;

The level of nitrogen fertilization achieved;

The number and time of treatments performed;

The variety planted.

What climatic conditions favor the development of downy mildew?

Mold thrives when the weather is humid and hot! When humidity is above 90% and temperatures are between 10 and 25°C, this fungus thrives and spreads freely.

On the other hand, temperatures above 30°C and low humidity do not give this fungus any chance of survival.

How to prevent mold and protect tomato leaves?

The appearance of mould on tomato plants is not always easy to control! However, to protect your crop, you need to think about preventing the onset of the disease and arm yourself with effective fungicides!

How to avoid late blight in tomatoes?

Your tomatoes need plenty of ventilation, so make sure the plants are spaced out so that air can circulate and light can reach the entire crop.

Remove leaves that are in contact with the ground.

Avoid excess water when irrigating , as the latter is the main factor influencing the development of late blight.

Don’t grow your tomatoes in the same spot, as they appreciate crop rotation.

Be careful not to hurt your plants, especially when pruning, which should be done with clean scissors.

Properly fertilize your tomatoes with fertilizers that are low in nitrogen and high in potassium, because nutrient deficiencies weaken plants and make them more susceptible to pests.

Grow resistant varieties.

Separate your tomato and potato crops. Both can be affected by the same fungus and contaminate each other.

Your irrigation system emitters should be placed in the ground between the rows. Never wet the stems and foliage of the plants. Water only the tomato plants and allow the soil surface to dry between waterings (technique approved by gardening expert Oliver Hill of Garden List)

At the end of each harvest, remove all residue to reduce the risk of contamination of future plantings.

In case of infection, cutting, removing and burning infected plants as soon as the first symptoms appear is a good action to limit the spread of the disease.

Mildew control: how to protect tomato plants from mildew infection?

Tomatoes like low-humidity soil and grow best in mild temperatures (between 20 and 26°C)! To combat the appearance of tomato mildew, it is important to know that it is best to act preventively, when the weather conditions are favourable to the appearance of the disease. Once this occurs, it is very difficult to control!

The most effective thing you can do to protect your tomatoes from this fungal pest is to spray them with fungicides! If you don’t want to use industrial products, here is a list of natural ingredients that exasperate mold!

An infusion of horsetails

Spray your tomatoes with a horsetail infusion whenever the weather is humid! So in addition to defending your tomatoes, it will feed them and help them grow better! This nutrient-rich mildew treatment works twice! You will notice the benefits of copper wire a few days after its installation, due to the darker coloring of the leaves of your tomatoes.

nettle manure

Nettle manure is a fungicide that works very well to repel late blight in tomatoes. The bubbles that appear on the surface are a sign that fermentation has begun.

Stir every two days to release the accumulated gas. Your preparation will start to smell bad! That means everything is going well!

Fermentation can last up to 10 days or more if temperatures are not high.

If you no longer see bubbles on the surface, fermentation is complete. It’s ready!

If your nettle slurry no longer contains any traces of the plant and you keep your preparation in a closed container away from direct sunlight and heat, it can last for several months.

Bordeaux porridge

This product based on copper sulphate, quicklime and water has fungicidal properties that are highly valued in agriculture. More recent research has shown that Bordeaux mixture also has a positive effect on the good development of plants, thanks to its multiple nutritional qualities.

To prepare Bordeaux broth, the recipe is relatively simple! You can easily tell if your fruit is affected by the appearance of a white powder that covers the leaves, stem and even the flower. As a result, your tomato will curl, dry and fall off.

Ready!
