Whether it’s a gift we’ve received or a personal purchase, orchids<\/strong> are among the most beautiful plants that can decorate our home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But unfortunately, they need some attention<\/strong> and care<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It happens that, sometimes, our orchids<\/strong> start to wilt<\/strong> and dry out<\/strong>, even though, apparently, we are following all the proper rules<\/strong> for their care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One reason may be root rot<\/strong>,<\/strong> a more common phenomenon than you might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s find out together what it is and how to fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Causes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The reasons for<\/strong> root rot <\/strong>can<\/strong> be essentially threefold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excess water or moisture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In almost all cases, rotten<\/strong> roots <\/strong>depend on a cause that is not always easy to understand: excessive water<\/strong> absorption .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can depend both on watering<\/strong> too frequently<\/strong> and on having left<\/strong> the orchid<\/strong> in water too long if we water it by immersion<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, sometimes the water <\/strong>stagnates<\/strong> in the saucers<\/strong> which can raise the humidity<\/strong> level and compromise the normal development of the roots<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alteration of the terrain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another cause may be a change<\/strong> in the composition of the soil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many times we use fertilizers<\/strong> or fertilizers<\/strong> that are not specific to these plants for our orchids.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is an alteration in soil pH<\/strong> that can sour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it is precisely the acidic<\/strong> soil <\/strong>that damages the roots<\/strong>, often leading them to rot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soil that is too compact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is the rarest hypothesis, but equally possible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the soil<\/strong> used is too compact,<\/strong> it can suffocate the roots<\/strong> by preventing the passage of air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, the soil<\/strong> becomes too compact over time after watering it<\/strong> a few times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Notice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To find out if your orchids really have rotten<\/strong> roots<\/strong>, you can remove them from the vase<\/strong>, clean them from the soil<\/strong>, and examine them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the roots<\/strong> look dark<\/strong> and softer than<\/strong> normal, then they are rotting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trick to always keep the condition of your orchid’s<\/strong> roots<\/strong> under control is to use transparent vases<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This way, you can check if the roots are starting to rot<\/strong> simply by looking through the pot<\/strong>, without having to dig up the plant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remedies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To prevent<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The most effective remedy is undoubtedly prevention<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can prevent plant rot by avoiding the three different causes and therefore paying attention to watering<\/strong>, the fertilizers and fertilizers<\/strong> used, and the compactness of the soil<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nip in the bud<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If the roots<\/strong> are now rotten<\/strong>, you must follow a precise procedure<\/strong> in order to save your orchid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First you have to soak<\/strong> your plant<\/strong> for about an hour<\/strong>, in order to soften the roots<\/strong> and make the operation easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let the roots<\/strong> dry and remove them from the soil<\/strong>, trying to pull them out very carefully<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, remove the last remnants of soil<\/strong> by placing the roots under running <\/strong>water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, take the vase and wash it with water and white<\/strong> vinegar <\/strong>to kill viruses<\/strong> and bacteria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point, it’s time to… cut!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a pair of scissors<\/strong> or shears<\/strong> and cut off any roots that look rotten, dry, hollow, or broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NB:<\/strong> Before using the scissors and scissors<\/strong><\/strong>, make sure to sterilize them<\/strong> so as not to compromise the health of your orchid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disinfect & Replant<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After cutting off the rotten roots, sprinkle cinnamon<\/strong> over the remaining roots, which is a natural antifungal and will prevent any remaining bacterial<\/strong> or fungal<\/strong> residue from re-affecting your plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, put the plant<\/strong> back in the original pot<\/strong> and fill it with new soil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
