Ideal for decorating balconies in summer, this plant appreciates heat and sun, but is still very sensitive to cold and runs the risk of perishing in winter. Discover how to protect your geraniums from the first frosts of winter to see them bloom again in summer.

Geranium is a plant that does not tolerate cold well and is therefore at risk of succumbing to winter frosts. However, you can keep your geraniums in winter and see them bloom again thanks to these 3 methods.

How do you store your geraniums during the winter?

Keep geraniums as a houseplant

Indoor plants have always been in fashion. They allow you to decorate the house and brighten it thanks to the colors and aromas offered by flowering plants. If you have geraniums in pots outside your house, remember to bring them inside even before the first frosts.

Be sure to thoroughly clean your plant’s foliage first to avoid introducing outside pests into your home, such as mealybugs, whiteflies, or mites. Also consider removing any discolored or yellow stems and pruning them to about 2/3 of their length to ensure healthy plants.

If you still have doubts, spray the foliage with an insecticide that you can prepare at home, based on onion juice or garlic. You can now keep your geranium pots in a cool, bright place, away from drafts. The ambient temperature should be between 10°C and 15°C.

As for watering, reduce its frequency in winter, but do not let the roots dry out. So remember to water your geraniums at the first signs of dryness in the soil.

Starting at the end of winter, remember to gradually take your pots outside. That said, before exposing your geraniums to full sun, first keep them in the shade for a few days, then in partial shade so as not to overwhelm them with sunlight. Also resume watering gradually. Your plants will be ready to bloom in summer.

Put geraniums dormant

This method is more traditional, but is still a good alternative for overwintering geraniums. Your plants will go dormant and overwinter without foliage. This requires a dark, dry location where the temperature does not exceed 10°C, such as a garage or basement.

First start by digging up your geraniums and shaking them to remove any soil stuck to the roots. Then let your plants dry for a few days to prevent mold from forming. Once the roots are dry, wrap them in newspaper or a paper bag. You can also store them in a cardboard box. What matters is that the place is cool.

Once a month, check your geraniums and remove any damaged or dead leaves and roots. If you notice that some stems have wilted, soak them in water, let them dry, and store them again.

Starting in March, remove your geraniums from their shelter, clean them and cut the stems until they are green. Choose fresh soil to transplant your plants and continue watering them gradually.

cutting geraniums

This technique is effective if you want to propagate your geraniums and avoid buying new ones if overwintering your plants ever fails.

For this you will need:

A well-developed geranium plant.

A small bag of compost for cuttings.

One packet of rooting hormone powder

una podadora

First, fill small pots with rooting fertilizer and water them lightly to moisten the substrate. Then, using the pruner, take cuttings from the healthy stems of your plant. Prefers those found at the top of the geranium.

Then prepare each cut individually. To do this, gently remove the flower buds and flowers from the cutting.

Pour some rooting hormone powder into a container and dip the rooting hormone base into it to coat it with the powder. Please note that this step is optional, but it will help you get better results.

Then push each cutting into a separate pot, filled with potting soil, making sure to place it in the center of the pot. Once you’ve planted the cuttings, cover their pots with plastic bags to create a mini greenhouse for them. Then place them in a bright room in the house. The cuttings do not appreciate the cold and that is why they are kept away from drafts.

Check your cuttings frequently to make sure the soil is well-drained. After about 6 to 8 weeks, the cuttings form roots. As soon as they reach the size of two centimeters, you can plant them in spring in a planter or put them in the ground.

Cuttings can be made at the end of summer, during flowering or at the beginning of spring when the vegetation begins.

With these methods you will be able to protect your flowering plant from the winter cold to see it bloom again.

The geranium that bears the botanical name of Pelargonium is a perennial plant that bears fragrant flowers in shades of blue, pink, purple or even red.
