Once peeled, yellow peas are often dried, split, and then used in a number of different soups and dishes. Growing yellow peas in the garden requires cool growing conditions and plenty of sunlight.

Dig a planting area to a depth of 25-30cm about two weeks before planting. You can plant peas in the garden any time after the soil has reached a temperature of at least 7 degrees and is dry enough not to stick to garden tools.

Spread a 5 to 8 cm layer of compost or potting soil over the area. Till the soil well with a garden spade or a rototiller, if you have one.

Place the yellow pea seeds in rows 45-50 cm apart. Make holes 2 to 4 cm deep in the center of each row, about 2 cm apart. Sow one or two yellow pea seeds in each hole, then cover with garden potting soil.

Close the soil over the planted rows. Water the planted area well with a sprayer to completely soak the soil and keep the soil moderately moist, but allow it to dry out between watering.

Harvest peas when they are ripe, usually 55 to 80 days after planting and when they look swollen and slightly rounded.

When harvested at maturity, yellow peas are dry, hard and swollen with starch and are high in protein.

Once the yellow peas are stripped of their fiber-rich integument, and then even richer in energy and protein, the yellow peas (seeds) are separated into two parts (cotyledon) to give what is called the yellow split pea.

You can then finely grind them into a split pea flour!

To grow yellow peas, you will need:

Yellow Pea Seeds

compost or potting soil

garden shovel or rudder

nebulizer

Plant stakes or trellises

If you are planting climbing-type varieties of yellow peas, it is a good idea to place them on a trellis or plant stakes before planting. Climbing type varieties of yellow peas will need good support to grow.

Yellow peas or split peas (Pisum Sativum) are classified as garden pea varieties and are one of many pea varieties native to Europe and Central Asia.
