If you also like orchids<\/strong>, you’ve probably bought one, or received it as a gift, and watched helplessly as the loss of its wonderful flowers<\/strong>. Orchids are as beautiful as they are difficult to care for, but how come florists always have orchids in bloom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In reality, there is no specific trick, nor a magic formula, but a set of treatments and tricks that are essential to have a healthy plant and, consequently, full of flowers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a general premise, we should keep in mind that, in general, orchids do not accept direct exposure to sunlight. They also don’t do well outdoors, especially in places subject to temperatures that can drop below 15\u00b0C and rise above 30\u00b0C, and in environments that are too dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also important to know that the flowering of orchids occurs in spring, after the winter rest period. If we have an orchid without flowers during the winter, we have to wait. If we buy a flowering plant during the winter, it is certain that it comes from a greenhouse with artificial conditions and therefore the home environment will suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In any case, if we have an orchid without flowers and we want it to bloom<\/strong>, we must follow the precautions we suggest below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Find a well-lit spot<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Most orchids like bright corners, but no direct sun. The more ambient light, the higher the chances of them blooming during the next active period. The ideal place is near a window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Maintain Proper Substrate Humidity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Orchids are usually marketed with a pine bark substrate, as their roots need excellent drainage and minimal chance of waterlogging. They are parasitic plants of tropical forests that grow on trees and live off the ambient humidity. They need a lot of moisture but not a moist substrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the winter they should be watered little, but if the weather is dry and we have the heating on, it should be done more frequently (never more than once a week).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at the container against the light, if the humidity of the substrate is still noticeable, it should not be watered. If, on the other hand, it is dry, we will add water, always distilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In very dry places it is advisable to put a humidifier, or spray water on the leaves of the orchid every day. It’s also good to avoid placing the plant in places that are too humid, such as crowded bathrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Fertilize Frequently<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The flowering of orchids requires a specific fertilizer for this type of plant, which we can find in specialized stores. Without fertilizer, flowering is unlikely. It is usually marketed in liquid form, to be added to irrigation water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orchids that come from greenhouses are already abundantly fertilized, but after a few months you have to start treating them with fertilizer as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Ensure Proper Temperature Contrast<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To bloom, orchids need an excellent temperature contrast in the weeks leading up to the arrival of spring. Normally this contrast is around 10\u00b0C between the minimum of the night and the maximum of the day, always respecting the limits of 15\u00b0C and 30\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
