Beets are in the top 10 of the most popular vegetables to grow in our gardens. Growing beets is popular because they are relatively easy to grow and beets can be eaten fresh, stored or pickled, making them a crop that can be enjoyed all year round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garden preparation:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Dig the soil in the fall before planting, but do not add manure to the soil as this will prevent the roots from developing properly. When digging the soil, be careful to remove all stones, as they can limit root growth. If the soil is acidic, add the appropriate amount of lime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sowing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Beets should be sown only after the last frosts. Planting can be delayed a few weeks if you use a poly or cloche tunnel. Soak your beet seeds for a few hours before sowing. Each seed cluster actually contains one to four seeds. You can sow the seeds in seedling pots and transplant the seedlings to the final growing position, but some find that success rates are higher if seedlings are made directly into the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sow in rows, then start again about 30cm between rows. Sow the seeds to a depth of about 1cm and cover with soil. Sow clusters about 5 cm apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After sowing, make sure the soil stays moist until the seeds have germinated and you can watch the seedlings develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beets can also be grown in containers. Fill a 30cm diameter pot with potting soil and sow about 6 clusters of seeds at a depth of 2.5cm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beets will grow in shade or partial sun. If it is in full sun, make sure the soil does not dry out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The type of soil<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Beets like non-acidic soil: pH around 6.5-7.0. Beets grow well in a medium with light soils, digging deeper will help heavy soils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caring<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When seedlings appear, there may be more than one seedling in each seed group. Remove them all, but keep the strongest seedling in each group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the seedlings have reached 5cm in height, you can guide them to their final position: around 10cm for round varieties and around 15cm for tall varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not let the soil dry out, as this can reduce the growth rate and the roots may become woody and less succulent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harvest<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Round beets taste most tender and largest when they are about 3cm in diameter. When harvesting beets, it makes sense to harvest as much as possible from each row so that there is more space between the beets left on the ground. This will help in their development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the size of round varieties reaches about 7.5 cm in diameter, they should be harvested as any future growth will make them less attractive. Gently dig under the root with a trowel and lift the bulb into the soil being careful not to damage the outer skin. The less the plant is damaged, the longer the beet can be stored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harvested beets are delicious pickled, but can also be stored in a cool, dry environment, such as a wooden box filled with sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Few people realize that beet greens are also edible and can be used similarly to spinach. They should be eaten fresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two main types of beet varieties: round (or globe) beet and long beet. Round varieties have bulbous roots and long varieties have a shape similar to parsnips. Long-rooted varieties can grow to about 10 inches long and tend to take longer to develop than globe varieties. A popular variety is Bolthardy, which is resistant to bolting, so it is often used as an early sowing variety.
