Before you learn how to grow a lemon tree from seeds today, let&#8217;s discuss some important things you should know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may take a few years for an indoor lemon tree to flower and produce fruit, but it is worth the wait. Their glossy leaves and rapid growth fascinate any green addict and you really can&#8217;t compare the taste of indoor-grown lemons to store-bought fruit. As we said, lemon trees are among the easiest and most spectacular trees to grow indoors, but that doesn&#8217;t mean you shouldn&#8217;t pay full attention to their germination and propagation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article is a step-by-step guide to help you grow a lemon tree from seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, we&#8217;ll go over all the items you&#8217;ll need to make sure your lemon seeds germinate and then we&#8217;ll explain in detail how to germinate the seeds and have healthy growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What you need to grow a lemon tree from seeds:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 One or two lemons: we recommend organic varieties that have been subjected to the least treatment with pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers.<br>\u2013 A small plastic zipper bag and paper towels<br>\u2013 Sterile citrus soil or peat moss, perlite, vermiculite and organic fertilizer.<br>\u2013 10 cm pots (terracotta or plastic).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will also need a warm, shady location to germinate lemon seeds and a sunny location to grow lemon trees once they have germinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.potager.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/citronier-arbre.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.potager.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/citronier-arbre.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2809\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Seed Germination on Paper Towels:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I tried germinating lemon seeds with the paper towel method this winter and was surprised by its simplicity and effectiveness. I had a 90% success rate with germinating lemon seeds on paper towels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Collect the seeds<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cut the lemon and harvest its fleshiest seeds.<br>Keep in mind that some of them may not germinate, so you will need several. I recommend trying this with a minimum of 5 seeds.<br>Clean the pulp from the seeds, then rinse them with warm water and dry them with a paper towel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Remove the white skin from the seeds (optional)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This speeds up germination as the little sprout no longer needs to pierce the skin, that makes sense right?<br>However, be careful not to cut the seeds or you could puncture the sprout inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: Some tutorials on growing lemon trees from seeds also recommend peeling the second (brown) layer of skin to further speed up the germination process. I didn&#8217;t, but I don&#8217;t think it would hurt if you were careful enough not to pierce, cut, or break the cotyledons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Wrap the seeds in a damp paper towel and seal them in a bag<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place the seeds about 2cm apart on paper towels and cover them tightly with another paper towel.<br>Wrap them gently and spray the paper towel until it is damp.<br>Then, seal everything in a plastic bag and write today&#8217;s date on the bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is normal to leave some air inside the bag, in fact, most online tutorials recommend this practice because seeds need moisture, heat and air to germinate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Place the bag in a warm and shady place<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your lemon seeds do not need light at this point, but they do need a lot of heat and humidity, as mentioned above. Keep them away from cold or drafty places in your home to speed up the germination process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 2 to 4 weeks or when the roots are at least 3 to 5 cm long, the seeds are ready to be planted in the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Prepare the soil and a pot for each plant<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pots should be at least 7 cm in diameter and at least 10 cm high.<br>The ideal soil should have a pH of 5.5 to 6.5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can use the special citrus potting soil mix or make your own using the ingredients listed above in equal quantities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Carefully separate the seedlings from the paper towels<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t matter if they only have roots, the plants will grow if they receive the proper care described below. Also, paper towels stuck to the roots is not serious, it has happened to my seedlings too and it does not affect growth. Don&#8217;t risk breaking a root just because there&#8217;s a little paper stuck to it, it&#8217;s not worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Plant seedlings about 3 cm deep<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When making holes in the soil, also take into account the length of the roots. When covering the seedlings, gently pat the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t press too hard or you could break the roots. Allowing the soil to be slightly loose gives adequate access to nutrients, moisture and air and helps plants develop healthy root systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Keep the soil moist at all times until 4-5 leaves appear on each plant<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, gradually move the plants to a sunny window in your home. The perfect spot for a lemon tree is right in front of a south-facing window for maximum sun exposure, so try to move them closer and closer to their future location. Remember to move the plant regularly until it reaches the ideal spot. Be careful, however, not to burn them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Then let the first 2 cm of soil dry (but no more) between watering<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t let the entire pot of soil dry out, it will surely kill your plant because lemon trees are tropical plants and love humidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.potager.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/fleur-citronier.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.potager.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/fleur-citronier.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2810\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once large enough you can transplant it to your garden, but be careful of frost if you live in a cold region, remember to protect it from any risk of frost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, a frequently asked question, how long does it take for a lemon tree grown from seed to produce lemons?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After planting your lemon tree, you need to wait about three years before it can produce lemons that you can actually pick and use for consumption. When growing a lemon tree from seed, regardless of the method, you must wait three to six years before it can produce edible fruit.
