They are one of the most desired plants by flower lovers. Despite this, the question often arises about what is the care of orchids in winter<\/strong> . A question that arises spontaneously, especially if we take into account that the majority of them (although already acclimatized outside their original habitats) are of tropical origin. In this article we see what precautions we should take into account for this plant during the cold months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, these months are characterized by a drop in temperatures. Therefore, although its behavior depends on the type of orchid<\/strong> , generally  its well-being is compromised below the 10 degrees<\/strong> . A good reason not only to keep these plants inside our home, but also to avoid them being exposed to drafts<\/strong> (especially if it is cold, because it could spoil its leaves). However, be careful to keep it away from heat sources<\/strong> in the house (radiators, space heaters…).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, although the leaves may seem trivial to us, the truth is that during the winter they are the only representatives and guardians of our plant. In the cold months,  the orchid needs to save energy to protect itself<\/strong> from it, but also to be able to consume it when temperatures begin to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the treatments that can make an orchid feel comfortable is receiving a good amount of light during the winter<\/strong> . One of the rarest products of this season, but absolutely necessary for the health of the orchid. Therefore, we must ensure that the plant receives the most daily light<\/strong> , which is also a good reason to change the location of the plant looking for a more illuminated space<\/strong> (that is, one that is free of cold and drafts).<\/p>\n\n\n

Irrigation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Watering is<\/strong> one of the most delicate care for orchids. And we say delicate because its excess can lead the plant to compromise its health<\/strong> until death. If during the rest of the year it is a vital aspect, it becomes even more important during the winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As always, we will be guided by the color of its roots to know when it is the right time to water<\/strong> ; and, in addition, we will try to  always water in the morning<\/strong> and always removing excess water<\/strong> (this will help counteract the attack of fungi, the orchid’s biggest enemies, especially in the cold months).<\/p>\n\n\n

Transplant<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Finally,  the winter months can be a good time for a transplant<\/strong>  since we will not prevent or slow down the growth of the flowers with this stress. Thanks to the transplant we will give the orchid a new substrate (remember that it must always be one specific for orchids<\/strong> ) and without weighing it down, which will also contribute to the a> correct irrigation drainage.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applying a specific fertilizer<\/strong> when winter begins to end will help the orchid in the face of spring, to wake up from winter and reactivate its vegetative cycle.
