And for good reason, it is the essential citrus fruit to flavor all our dishes; but also to detoxify our body. Except that, by buying them and accumulating them for a long time in the kitchen, we risk seeing them rot and having to reluctantly throw them away. Maybe you didn’t know it, but there are several ways to keep them for longer without the risk of seeing them moldy.

Check out these four ways to preserve lemons for a long time so you don’t let them rot or waste them unnecessarily.

Lemon in ice cube molds – Source: spm

In ice cube molds

The first method is that of ice cubes. Original, but really effective, this trick will prevent you from wasting your lemons and will preserve their freshness for a long time.

Take your lemons, grate the zest, then squeeze the juice. Place everything in the ice cube molds. All you have to do is put them in the freezer. When they are well solidified, remove them from the molds, place them in a silicone thermal bag and put them back in the freezer, you can take them out whenever you want and use them for all occasions.

With toothpicks

The second method is to use toothpicks. As you know, we often have the habit of cutting the lemon in half and using only half, while the other part is put back in the refrigerator. However, the mistake that almost all of us make is to keep this half open. Inevitably, it will lose its freshness and nutritional properties. The good reflex to take: use toothpicks by inserting them between one half of the lemon and the other to pick it. This way it will remain fresh for several days and ready to use!

Lemons in water – Source: spm

In water

This method is also wise, as you will preserve the entire lemon. Simple and practical, this trick allows you to preserve your lemons for longer without seeing them moldy. Simply place them in a container and add enough water to cover them. Place the lid on the container and place everything in the refrigerator for at least 2 or 3 days. If, however, you only have half a lemon to preserve, place the cut half upside down in a saucer full of water, which will preserve the pulp.

With a savory seasoning

Finally, the last method is undoubtedly the most elaborate process of all. Take a baking dish and put a layer of sea salt in it. Then add the zest of 5 lemons. Use a spoon to mix everything together. Then pour in the juice of the squeezed lemons (obviously as much as possible). Then bake at 190° for about twenty minutes and then another 10 at 150°. Remove the dish from the oven and leave to cool. Finally put everything in a glass jar. You have just created an ideal sauce for pasta, cold rice, salads, etc. This sauce will be very useful to you every day, to keep preciously in your pantry.

Lemon tree – Source: spm

How to grow lemons in a pot at home?

We have seen how to preserve lemons, now let’s see how to grow them at home

ingredients

1 lemon

Any type of organic soil

A suitable container or vase

An environment with lots of sun

Plant

1. Place the soil in the pot and add a little water to moisten it.

2. Cut the lemon and select the seed with the best shape. Don’t dry it, humidity can still help. Make a small hole in the soil and place the seed inside.

3. Cover with soil and more water.

4. Cover the pot with plastic to retain moisture, then place it in a sunny spot.

5. Be careful not to overwater, which can cause seed rot. Keep track of the pot and as soon as the lemon tree starts to grow, remove the plastic. This should usually happen within a week or two.

6. Place the pot in full sun. Remember that your lemon tree needs eight hours of light a day and the soil around it should be constantly moist.

That’s it, you can grow your own lemons at home!

Lemons, we always have them in the pantry.
