Empty. But now… I’ll tell you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The room fell silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Can someone explain to me what’s going on?” I asked, unable to contain myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Valeria nodded, trying to compose herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “The week I disappeared… two men came to look for you. They were debt collectors. They had your name on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “That’s impossible,” I said. I don’t owe anyone anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “They had documents,” he continued. Contracts. Legal papers. Your name was on everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I shook my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I never had a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then he looked at my father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So do I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He avoided my gaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally he spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Years ago… Put a company in your name. It was temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “You put debts in my name!” I exploded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Valeria took a step forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “The company failed worse than he admits. The debts were hidden, restructured… buried. But someone began to investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I looked at her, incredulous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “And your solution was to marry him?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pain crossed his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I needed access.” Control. A way to solve it quickly without getting involved. Marriage was the most direct legal route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It took me a while to assimilate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “You married him…” by procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “You should have told me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His voice trembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “If I did, you would have tried to fix it yourself… and you would have made it worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I wanted to discuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But part of me knew he was right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I didn’t leave because I didn’t love you anymore,” he whispered. I left because I love you enough to protect you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That hurt more than all of the above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I left the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Outside, the air was cold and sharp. I tried to breathe, to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A few seconds later, I heard his footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He stopped next to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Why do it like this?” I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Because people question the documents,” he replied. It does not question a marriage. It had to look real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “And it looked horrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “It was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We sat in silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After a while, I asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Since when have you been carrying this?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Since I discovered it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Alone?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n He smiled wearily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014Almost always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He handed me a folder. Contracts. Clauses. My name everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “You should have trusted me,” I said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “And you should have asked more questions,” he replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Silence returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “And now what happens?” I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “The debts are settled. You’re safe. Your name can be cleared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He hesitated for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Now… you decide what to do with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I looked into the darkness, as everything blended inside me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Love. Anger. Betrayal. Gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I don’t know what this is now,” I admitted.
