One of the most common (and most annoying) problems is when the water is constantly running. At first glance it may seem like a minor detail, but over time it generates a significant expense and leaves stains that are difficult to remove. In addition, listening to that continuous drip can be exasperating and represents a waste of resources.

For months I spent time lifting the lid of the tank to clean the rubber, adjust the buoy or try some “magic solution”. Until one day a plumber friend gave me a piece of information that solved the issue forever. And the best part: without spending money or changing spare parts.

The origin of the problem

Over time, water quality, limescale, scale, and other impurities cause the rubber that seals the passage of water in the tank to lose adhesion. It no longer closes well and begins to leak, even if it is a very thin thread. That constant loss not only makes the bill more expensive, but also stains the bottom of the toilet and wears out the mechanism.

The problem may be caused by:

Deformed rubber: loses its original shape due to wear or accumulation of debris.

Poorly calibrated buoy: it does not rise enough to cut off the water ingress.

Loose flush valve: does not seal properly.

Tartar build-up: Prevents parts from fitting well.

What I tried before (and it didn’t work for long)

Clean the gum with vinegar and baking soda

Align the float or change the buoy

Adjusting the Water Level Screw

Change the position of the button or chain

Disassemble and replace the flush valve

Everything worked… but only for a few days. Until I discovered the “counterweight trick”.

The Counterweight Trick

The secret is to add a light weight that helps the rubber or flush valve close well without letting water pass through. It’s that simple. The weight pulls down the shut-off mechanism and makes the valve rest better against the base. It is a basic principle of leverage and gravity applied to domestic plumbing.

Materials you need:

A thin wire, sturdy thread, or seal

A nut, stone, screw, washer, or any small, heavy object

Desire to get in and try something new

How to do it step by step:

Lift the lid off the tank carefully.

Identify the stem or arm that lifts the rubber from the bottom when you pull the chain or press the button.

Tie the thread or wire at that point, where the valve rests again.

At the other end, hang the weight. The objective is to pull it slightly downwards without preventing it from lifting when the discharge is activated.

Taste several times until it is just right: not too light (does not seal), nor too heavy (does not discharge).

Advantages of the method

No tools or spare parts needed

It is reversible and adjustable

Saves between 100 and 300 liters of water per day depending on the type of loss

You avoid tartar and brown stains on the bottom of the toilet

Does not modify or damage the original mechanism

Additional Tips

If the tank has a lot of limescale or scale, empty it and clean it with hot vinegar and a stiff sponge.

If the rubber is cut, cracked, or deformed, change it before trying this trick.

Wear latex gloves to avoid direct contact with dirty water.

Do it with the water cut closed to work with peace of mind.

Make a note of the date of the arrangement: these homemade tricks can last for years if they are done well.

Prevention: how to prevent it from happening again

Clean the tank every 6 months

Use cleaning tablets but not abrasive ones

Check the condition of the rubber from time to time

Use filters at the water inlet if you live in areas with a lot of lime

Conclusion

Sometimes the simplest is the most effective. This plumber’s hack is a homemade, easy, and effective solution to a classic household problem. With a little ingenuity, you can save yourself headaches, money on the bill and even a visit from the plumber. Try it, adjust it to your system, and you’ll see the difference. Because at home, with homemade tools and the desire to fix, everything can be done.

The toilet is one of those items that we take for granted until it starts to fail.
