These enchanting plants steal the show as soon as their first flowers appear.

It shouldn’t be difficult to grow these plants, but you need to meet their basic requirements.

I’ve put together a complete guide to growing lupins, where you’ll learn everything you need to know, from the origin and varieties to ideas for landscaping and care.

So let’s get started!

What are lupins?

As for the botanical background of these plants, they belong to the Fabaceae family and are part of the genus Lupinus.

Lupins are also known as lupins or bluebonnets. Its tall stems and colorful flowers have made it one of the favorite plants of many landscapers.

Lupins can be both annual and perennial, depending on the variety. However, the plants you see in nurseries are always perennial, meaning they come back year after year.

This is not the case with lupin seeds; you should be careful when buying, because there is a high probability that they are annual plants.

What many beginners who choose lupins don’t know is that the Fabaceae family is actually the legume family. And yes, these plants actually produce beans! However, they are not as widespread in the US as they are in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

Amazingly, these beans have been used for centuries, especially by the Romans and the Incas.

However, you should not consume lupine beans if you are allergic to peanuts, as there are many cases where consumers have shown the same allergy symptoms. (1)

Where are you from?

Some species are native to Europe and America. However, both annual and perennial varieties have been grown in many parts of the world for some time.

You may be surprised to hear that these plants are classified as invasive in some regions, such as Scandinavia and parts of New Zealand. (2)

Reasons to grow lupins

Well, the stunning appearance of lupins is not the only reason why we should grow them in our gardens. With their dense and colorful flower spikes, they are undoubtedly a perfect addition to any outdoor space.

But there are a few other reasons why lupins deserve a place in your garden.

• These plants can drive deer out of your garden.

• They are excellent companion plants because they fix the nitrogen content in the soil, which is especially beneficial for vegetables and other flowering plants.

• The flowers of the lupins attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. Believe it or not, the charnel blue cannot survive without these plants and uses them as a nesting site and food. (3)

• Lupins are perfect cut flowers and look spectacular in floral arrangements.

• These plants can retain moisture and protect the soil from erosion. They can also reduce the need for chemical fertilizers.

Landscaping ideas

If you’re short on ideas on how to use lupins in your landscape, maybe these ideas can help you.

• Lupins are the best addition to home gardens.

• Create a border in front of a fence or wall, especially if these structures look unattractive and you don’t want to spend money on renovation.

• Add lupins behind shorter plants to fill the space; it is best to combine them with some red or pink perennials.

Best lupine varieties

It can be difficult to decide on a type of lupin, as they all look incredibly good. Here are some of the most common varieties and their characteristics.

• Wild lupins: If you want to add a splash of color to your garden, these varieties are best because they come in a variety of colors, such as white, purple, pink, and blue.

• Miniature lupins: These plants differ from the other varieties in their growth habit. They have evolved into a more compact form. This variety is found in North Africa, and it usually does not grow taller than 1.3 meters.

• Silver lupins: These varieties are mainly found on the west coast of the USA. It can grow up to 1.5 m high and develops a hilly shape. It gives off a sweet scent, and best of all, pollinators love it!

• Riverside lupins: As the name suggests, these lupins are found near rivers and streams.

• Large-leaved lupines: Your summer garden will look amazing if you add large-leaved lupines. Its flowering period begins in July and ends in August, when you will see an abundance of blue and purple flowers.

• Trunk lupins: These are hybrid varieties with foot-long panicles and two-coloured flowers. The most common shades are orange, red, yellow and purple.

• Arctic lupins: These varieties are easily recognizable by their enchanting bluish-purple flowers.

• European yellow lupins: The name says it all: these varieties bloom yellow from June to July. If you want to get edible beans, you should go for this variety.

• Yellow bush lupins: Native to California, this variety produces perfect golden yellow flowers and develops into tall plants that can serve as eye-catchers.

When and how long do they bloom?

The flowering period of these plants usually begins in spring or early summer.

The flowering period can last about a month. This may seem short, but you can extend the flowering period by using the deadheading technique. I will show you how to do this in the following sections.

Since you can get another set of flowers, you can use lupins as perennials for autumn.

When should you plant lupins?

Many gardeners choose to plant lupins in early spring. However, in my experience, they thrive better if they are planted at the end of spring and left to overwinter.

They then bloom as soon as spring approaches, similar to thimbles.

Some gardeners plant them at the end of autumn or early winter. If you live in warmer climates, this method works well.

Conditions that must be ensured

If you want to get an abundance of enchanting lupine flowers, you need to make sure that all the conditions are right. Sun, water and soil are the three most important factors in the care of lupins. So don’t start planting until you’ve read the following sections.

Light exposure

Lupins can be planted in both semi-shaded and sunny gardens. However, partial shade will not give you the results you want.

Lupins need full sun to form an abundance of colorful flowers. So find the sunniest spot in your garden and make it available only for lupins.

The best soil type

The soil is probably the most difficult thing to know when caring for lupins, especially for beginners.

These plants need evenly moist soil, but they are very sensitive to soil that is too wet. Their goal is to have a well-drained and sandy soil so that the excess water can drain well.

Heavy and compact soils are not a good choice for lupins, as these plants develop long roots that should easily reach into the soil.

If the soil in your garden does not meet these requirements, you have two options. The first is to enrich the soil with materials that improve drainage, such as perlite or horticultural sand.

The second option is to cultivate these plants in containers, as you can easily prepare and supplement the soil.

I also recommend doing a soil test; the pH value should be neutral or acidic so that the lupins can grow healthily.

Watering Schedule

The best thing about the plants in the genus Lupinus is that they don’t need a lot of water to thrive.

You only need to water if there are longer dry periods in your area.

If there is sufficient rainfall, additional irrigation is not necessary.

How to plant lupins

Now that we know the perfect conditions for lupins, it’s time to learn how to plant these plants. You can choose between three different cultivation methods: transplanting, seeds, and cuttings.

If you choose to buy the plants from a nursery, you can grow them in containers or plant them directly in the ground.

Let’s look at both options.

Planting in containers

Interestingly, it is not customary to grow lupins in containers. But if you do everything right, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t thrive.

Here are the steps.

1. First of all, you need to choose a suitable container. These plants are quite large, so you’ll need large containers. You can use large plastic pots, but make sure they have plenty of holes in the bottom to allow excess water to drain away.

Alternatively, you can also use fabric pots. These pots have proven to be particularly suitable for lupins because of their good porosity. The water cannot accumulate in the soil, and our lupins are thriving!

2. Select suitable varieties. As mentioned earlier, varieties such as the miniature lupins are better suited to growing in containers due to their compact shape and small size.

3. Fill your container with a well-drained, acidic to neutral growing medium.

4. Make a hole in the middle of the bottom. Since these are larger plants that need about a meter of space to spread, it is better to plant one plant per container.

5. After planting the plants, fill the soil well and add water.

6. Place the pots in a place where the plants get enough sun.

7. Keep the soil evenly moist as your plants develop.

A frequently asked question is how much water the plants need in the first few months. Don’t just rely on the rainfall during this time; as soon as you notice that the soil is dry, you should give it water.

Plants in the ground

Another way to plant lupins is to plant them directly in the ground. This method is more common than planting in containers.

And this is how it works.

1. Choose the spot where you want to plant the plants, taking into account the conditions described above.

2. Prepare the soil by enriching it with organic matter to improve drainage and increase nutrient levels.

3. Dig holes for each lupine, making sure that there is a distance of about 1 to 2 meters between each hole.

4. Place the plants in the holes, fill the soil around the base and water well.

5. Keep the soil moist while the lupins continue to develop. When the lupins are fully grown, water them according to the instructions above.

How to grow lupins from seeds

There are two ways to grow lupins from seed: indoors or outdoors.

Let’s look at both options.

Growing lupine seeds indoors

If you’ve bought seeds or collected them from the lupins you already have in your garden, you can sow them outdoors about a month or two before sowing.

Here’s how to do it.

1. Let the lupin seeds soak overnight first to promote germination. Many growers also expose them to the cold and achieve similar results.

2. Take the cell packs and sow the seeds, but make sure that the growing soil is moist. Add a thin layer of soil to prevent light from reaching the seeds.

3. Watch the seeds and wait for the germination process to complete. In the meantime, make sure you keep the potting soil moist.

As soon as you notice that your lupins have formed the first true leaves, thin them out. Remember that you should only use one plant per container.

4. Toughen off the seedlings by taking them outdoors every day; start with an hour or two and gradually increase that time.

5. Your seedlings will soon have grown enough to be planted out in their final location.

I must warn you that you should not wait too long to plant the seedlings outdoors. If you wait too long, the roots won’t have enough room to spread, and they’ll produce low-quality plants and flowers.

If you disturb the roots at this stage, transplanting will be much more difficult than it should be.

Start seeds outdoors

Lupins are a flowering plant whose seeds you can sow directly into the ground.

Here’s how.

1. Start by breaking up the floor; the depth should be about 1 to 2 feet. Smooth it gently.

2. Place the lupine seeds on top; do not use the spreading technique at this stage, remember that these plants need about 1 m of height to spread.

3. Add a thin layer of soil over the seeds; 1/8 of an inch is sufficient.

4. Water everything with a watering can; do not use a hose, as the seeds can be washed out quickly or buried too deeply.

5. During the germination of the seeds, the soil must be kept moist until the plants have fully grown.

The time it takes for the lupine seeds to germinate can vary depending on the conditions. It can take anywhere from a few weeks to up to 75 days.

The only thing I can recommend you do during this process is to be patient. The seeds will most likely germinate if you follow the steps above, so don’t think you’ve failed even if you don’t see any new growth after a few months.

How to grow lupins from cuttings

Gardeners love to grow their plants from cuttings because it’s cheap and produces a lot of plants.

Let’s look at the steps.

1. Choose a container that drains quickly; if there are not enough holes, just drill some.

2. Fill the container with masonry sand, add water and wait for the excess water to dry out.

3. Take a sharp, clean knife and cut off the stems of the lupins, but only those that have a heel (a strip of bark left at the bottom of the cut).

4. Remove the lower leaves and place the lupine cuttings in the sand. Tap the sand firmly so that the stems can stand up.

5. Wrap the container with a plastic wrap; prevent the plastic wrap from reaching the cutting with a stake.

6. Place the container with the lupine cuttings in a warm place that receives bright but indirect light.

7. Cover the container every day and let it sit for about half an hour. On this occasion, you can also lightly spray the sand with a spray bottle.

8. The cuttings of lupins usually take no more than a month to form new roots. Simply put the rooted cuttings in a peat bale and transplant them outdoors once they have grown.

Care for lupins

Now that you know all about growing lupins, it’s time to learn what these plants need when growing in your perennial garden.

Let’s look at everything in detail!

Fertilization

In general, these perennials do not need much food to grow healthily. But as with any other plant, it doesn’t matter if you add something.

A layer of compost stimulates the lupins to grow again and healthily, so make sure you don’t put the compost too close to the crown.

You can also add some fertilizer with a higher phosphorus content, as this promotes flower formation.

Never feed your lupins nitrogen-containing fertilizer, as this promotes leaf formation and you will have fewer flowers.

Keep in mind that lupins are one of the plants that thrive better without than with too much fertilizer.

Mulching

Similar to fertilization, mulching is not mandatory, but it is beneficial for your lupins. The layer should not be thicker than 5 cm and should never be too close to the crown.

I recommend mulching especially to gardeners who live in hot and dry climates because it helps the soil retain moisture.

In addition, this method helps to keep weeds away from the beds.

Staking

There is a really surprising thing about lupins. We all know they have tall stems, but they are so sturdy that you don’t always need to support them.

I recommend supporting lupins only if you live in a windy region.

If your bed has a lot of these plants, use growing lattice stakes instead of pricking each plant individually.

Cut

There are two things to consider when pruning lupins: removing the inflorescences and pruning.

Especially with annual plants, mistakes are often made when pruning. So if you have an annual lupin variety, keep in mind that it will die at the end of the season, whether you cut off the flowers or not.

Further flowering can occur in both annual and perennial plants if you cut off the head, but only after the lupins begin to wilt and before they form seeds.

I must mention that the lupins do not bloom so abundantly in the second flowering period.

If you have perennial lupins, you should cut them back after the end of the flowering period. This is perhaps the hardest part of lupin care, because if you cut back too much, the plant can die.

Instead of cutting the lupins down to the ground, you should use a similar technique to removing the inflorescences and remove only the flower stems.

A note on dividing and transplanting lupins

Many gardeners divide and transplant their plants, and if you’re wondering if you can do the same with lupins, you’ll be disappointed.

These plants have deep roots and do not respond well to transplanting. They usually re-sprout in the spring, and that’s not exactly the best time to disturb the roots.

Even if they respond well to transplanting, it is very difficult to divide the roots due to their firm structure.

Pest and disease control

Powdery mildew, leaf spots, and anthracnosis are the most common diseases that occur in plants from the genus Lupinus.

If your lupins are affected by powdery mildew, white, powdery spots will appear on the leaves, which will spread quickly until they have affected the entire plant by the end of the season. (4)

Leaf spot can occur if your lupins are attacked by a fungus such as Ovularia or Thedgonia. (5)

Treating diseases is always difficult, so it is best to avoid them in the first place. This can be easily done by ensuring that there is enough distance between the individual plants when planting. This also applies to the distance between the lupins and all the other plants in your garden.

Pests such as thrips, slugs, slugs, and aphids can appear on these plants, and it can become difficult to get rid of them if you don’t respond in time.

Aphids are the most dangerous because when they attack your lupins, they suck out their tissues and ingest the alkaloids. The main problem is that the lupins then become poisonous. Beneficial insects that can solve the problem with aphids are poisoned when they consume any parts of the plant.

Here, too, prevention is the best medicine. Some natural solutions, such as Epsom salts, can help you solve the aphid problem.

You shouldn’t have any problems with larger animals; Lupins are a deer-resistant plant.

Best lupine companion plants

Planting lupins in your garden is a wonderful idea, as they get along great with other plants. For example, if you grow vegetables and have problems with nitrogen, just plant lupins nearby.

Plants from the genus Allium go well with lupins because they bloom at the same time as them.

Coneflower and phlox also do well near lupins and add a special touch to your garden.

Our journey ends here. If you decide to grow lupins, you now know what to do and how to keep these plants happy and healthy for many years to come! Have fun growing!

If you want to create a cottage garden, lupins are a must.
