Some of these vines are grown purely for decorative purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grown from tubers or root sprouts, sweet potatoes thrive best in sandy marl soil and need sunlight and about 120 days of warm temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Planting Sweet Potatoes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mound the soil to about 30 cm in height and 30 cm in width. Sweet potatoes appreciate good drainage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant the tubers 10 cm deep, leaving 40 cm of space between each, and keep them moist for several days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sweet potato tubers are usually planted in warm weather, so it\u2019s best to cover them with a planter or flower pot to protect them from the strong sun for a few days after planting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increasing the Harvest<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With edible or ornamental sweet potatoes, you can increase your harvest by cutting 15 cm pieces of stem and planting them in moist potting soil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Curing<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After digging up the sweet potatoes, cure them in a warm place (29\u00b0C) for 7 to 10 days. This curing period helps toughen the skin while making the tubers sweeter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once cured, store the tubers in a cooler place where the temperature is between 13 and 18\u00b0C. They will keep for four to five months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Growing Potatoes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grow what you can\u2019t buy, like butter-yellow flesh potatoes or the oblong &#8220;Roussette&#8221; variety. Blue-flesh potatoes are fun to grow, as is the &#8220;Totally Blue&#8221; variety. You can also try the &#8220;Caribe&#8221; potato, which has snow-white flesh under purple skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Help Potatoes Stay Cool<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plant early, two to three weeks before the last expected frost, when the soil is still cold.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When leaves and stems appear, start mulching to keep the soil cool and moist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Potatoes stop producing new tubers when the soil warms up, so it\u2019s best to help them get off to a quick start in the spring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Store Potatoes in Darkness<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Light exposure turns potatoes green and causes solanine, a mildly toxic substance with a bitter taste.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As the plants grow, keep as much soil or mulch around them as possible to prevent the sun from reaching the tubers, which are sometimes just below the soil surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wait for a cloudy day to harvest the potatoes so you don\u2019t expose them to bright sunlight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New Potatoes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>True new potatoes are small potatoes harvested while the plants are still green.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gently remove the mulch, feel around to gather the potatoes, and then replace the mulch once you\u2019ve collected enough for your dinner.
