Leaves catch sunlight to produce energy, so it’s a good idea to make sure the leaves are developed before planting, to give them an edge. You can start them indoors if you’re planning a greenhouse.

If the leaves can’t catch enough sunlight, the plant simply won’t be able to establish itself and will likely succumb to pests or diseases.

That said, there are also benefits to growing vegetables in the shade, as a shady spot slows down growth, but it also slows down flowering. Plants prone to blooming may benefit from less sun.

1. Beets

Beetroot is a tasty vegetable, easy to grow, and easy to store. Like most vegetables, they prefer partial shade, so if you can, give them a few hours of sun a day. The more sun they get, the faster they grow, so if you’re growing beets in the shade, you may need to be a little more patient.

You’ll need to sow the seeds in full sun to get them started. When the seedlings are 5 to 7 cm tall, plant the entire bed in the shaded area of your garden. Make sure to plant the clumps at least 30 cm apart so that they have enough room to grow.

Shaded areas are often damp, so allowing air to circulate will also reduce the risk of fungal diseases. To start, don’t place the plants too close together, give them some room to breathe and grow.

2. Lettuce

Lettuce is a staple in any garden because it is tasty and easy to grow. Once you know how to grow lettuce in the shade, it’s best that it will be much less likely to wilt and sprout. Lettuce leaves can sometimes become slightly bitter or hard if grown with too much heat and not enough water, so growing them in the shade can help alleviate this.

Slugs and snails tend to be more prevalent in shady areas. Choose an upright variety with loose leaves, such as red lettuce ‘lollo rossa’, to minimize damage. Harvest the leaves from the bottom up and try to make sure they don’t crawl across the soil surface. This will prevent slugs and snails from entering the plant a bit.

3. Swiss Swiss chard

Fabulous for providing nutrition, structure, and color, Swiss chard is also one of the easiest vegetables to grow in the shade. Sow in spring and you will have a harvest from summer to the following spring.

Swiss chard plants can grow quite large and are prone to fungal problems, such as powdery mildew, so be sure to give them room to grow and enough air circulation around the leaves.

The stems and leaves are edible and very versatile. Try a variety called mint for a big pop of pink to brighten up a dull corner of the garden.

4. Celery

Celery is a great addition to a vegetable garden, but without the right conditions it can sometimes be a little disappointing. Those crisp, watery stems we’re used to can become chewy and bitter when grown in the wrong conditions. Fortunately, growing celery in the shade can help achieve good results.

Celery needs a lot of water to produce tender, juicy stalks. Shaded areas are typically wetter because less water is lost from the soil surface through evaporation. Growing these vegetables in the shade also helps slow their growth, creating tender stems. In fact, many growers use collars around celery stalks to shade them and keep them pale and tender.

5. Carrots

Once you know how to grow carrots, you’ll understand how good they are for growing and harvesting. They can be prone to sprouting, so planting carrots in shaded, cooler conditions where they are protected from the hottest parts of the day can increase your harvest though of course their growth will be a little slower.

Carrot seeds should be sown directly into beds, so if possible, sow in a location that receives direct sunlight for part of the day, preferably in the morning when the heat is less intense. This will ensure that the seedlings can establish themselves and that the leaves grow large enough to cope with low-light conditions for the rest of the day.

Alternatively, some varieties grow well in containers, so you can move the pots to shady spots at the hottest times of the day.

6. Leafy greens

Leafy greens, such as bok choi, mizuna, mustard, bok choy, tatsoi, and cilantro, are among the easiest vegetables to grow in the shade. As with lettuce, other leafy greens are prone to blooming, and therefore careful use of shade can help their growth.

As a general rule, anything you don’t grow for its fruits or flowers tends to grow best in the shade.

Leafy greens that grow in lower light levels won’t grow as fast as those in full sun, but this can benefit us if we manage them well.

7. Broccoli

Another good choice of vegetables to grow in the shade are broccoli, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables, such as kohlrabi. Slower growth will be an advantage when it comes to broccoli and cauliflower, which need to be harvested a few days before they start flowering. This period will be a bit longer if they are not in full sun, so you have a better chance of catching them at the right time to harvest them.

You may find more slugs and snails in the shady parts of the garden. Crucifers can be prone to damage from slugs and snails. So, as with most of the crops on this list, it’s a good idea to sow them in full sun and plant them when they’re well established.

If you have a particularly large population of slugs and snails, you’ll want to wait until the plants are 10-12cm tall before transplanting them to give them the best chance of survival.

8. Spring onions and spring onions

Chives, or chives and chives, are easy to grow in most conditions, although growth is slower if you choose to grow chives in the shade. The more sun they get, the faster they grow, so for a longer growing period, you may want to consider growing some in the sun and some in the shade.

Sow in modules in a sunny location to help the plants establish themselves before planting them in a clump in the shade. If you grow them in partial shade, areas that receive about 6 hours of sun a day, you can sow them directly into the ground.

9. Radishes

Radishes are one of the quickest and easiest vegetables to grow in the shade. They are deliciously spicy and go well cooked or raw in salads.

You can sow radishes directly into the ground and shade can prevent radishes from blooming by placing a flowering stalk, which is a huge advantage as it can taste bitter if it blooms.

A little shade can also help keep the soil cooler and reduce water evaporation, which is definitely a plus in hot weather.

10. Kale or Kale

It’s easy to learn how to grow kale or kale, and there are plenty of varieties to choose from for this shade-tolerant crop. The tender, flavorful leaves of the cavolo nero or the curly, crunchy leaves of the redbor are sure to nourish it, even in winter and early spring when other crops are dormant.

And you?
